The practice was commissioned to carry out the
extension, the remodelling of the facades,the
refurbishment and fitting out of Collingwood
House, a mixed use development in the centre of
London. A very difficult planning permission was
sucessfully achieved.
The project brief called for the creation of 10 000
sq. ft of new office space and 10 000 sq ft of new
residential accommodation by adding areas to the
building in a manner that allowed improvement to
the appearance of the building as well as its
relationship to the adjoining buildings. The
additional areas provided the opportunity to create
large transparent areas of frameless glazing which
contrasted sharply with the solid “hole in wall”
language of the existing elevations developed in
the 1960’s.The redesigned facades create an
interesting play of solid to void, visually reducing
the apparent bulk and mass of the building while
reflecting the character of the surrounding
environment
