Swan Hill Properties commissioned the practice
to carry out extensive alterations and the
refurbishment of a shopping arcade and two
storey retail centre beneath a multi storey car
park in Bournemouth. The challenge was to bring
back new life into the centre that had fallen into
decline.
This required a creative approach to overcome
the difficulty arising from the lack of street
presence with only a narrow entrance and long
dark walk through the arcade to reach the centre
at the back of the building. The project included a
new entrance canopy to create a landmark
feature to attract shoppers into the centre from
the principal shopping street. The arcade was
redesigned to incorporate a large top lit glazed
atrium with escalators to provide access to the
upper level retail area and car park. The
commission included space-planning and fitting
out to meet a variety of tenant requirements.
